Obsidian occurs in the Neolithic flaked stone assemblages of Upper Mesopotamian settlements, mostly in the form of finished blade/ lets and retouched tools, reflecting the manner of import from source areas in east Anatolia. Owing to the scarcity of by-products, details of the core reduction technology used at such “ consumer” settlements have remained unexplored. This paper presents a technological analysis of obsidian core reduction strategies at the Late PPNB settlement of Tell Seker al-Aheimar in Northeast Syria. The results indicate that obsidian blade/ let production was practiced within the settlement, but was small-scale, episodic, and probably for domestic use.
